IMAP
IMAP keeps email synchronized with the mail server.
Benefits:
- messages remain available on multiple devices;
- read/unread status can synchronize;
- folders synchronize;
- sent mail can synchronize;
- better suited to phones, tablets and computers used together.
POP3
POP3 primarily downloads messages from the server to a device.
Depending on the configuration, messages may be removed from the server after download.
This can make POP3 less suitable for users who access email from several devices.
BIAS recommendation
Use IMAP unless BIAS or your organization's administrator has specifically instructed you to use POP3.
